I have a seizure disorder that still shows "abnormal" brain waves even with medication. Specifically, I have 4-cycle theta slowing in the temporal and frontal lobes. This seems to be a pretty consistent thing with me, as every EEG I've ever had shows this theta activity while I am awake. The neurologist reading my last EEG said this activity is "consistent with cognitive dysfunction." Well, I AM pretty spacy a lot!

I read one study once that inexplicably found that one person who had been practicing transcendental meditation (TM) for many years showed some of the same anomalies on her EEG as the participants who had seizure disorders, but the specific anomalies were not specified, as I recall. The meditator did not appear to be having difficulties, however, and this seemed to surprise the researchers.

Given that we're using UM to get to theta, I'm wondering if the theta "slowing" I show on my EEG is not really an abnormality but, rather, indicative of changes in consciousness that are actually a good thing. I wouldn't stop taking my medication without a neurologist's approval, of course (and I'm sure I would be discouraged from doing so), but it makes me wonder if the medication is not masking higher abilities.

Historically, epilepsy has been referred to as "the Divine disease" because people would sometimes have remarkable spiritual experiences while having seizures. I know I have. Or used to, before I got on 1800 mg of Neurontin a day.

I'm just wondering if anyone has any thoughts about any of this as it relates to using UM. I'm just really curious about all this.

Diane
